uMkhanyakude One Stop Shop strengthens cross-border opportunities

The strategic location of the One Stop Shop (OSS) in uMkhanyakude District is already positioning the area as a gateway for investment and cross-border trade, with plans underway to establish a trade partnership with neighbouring Eswatini.

The Cross-Border Trade Promotion Partnership, involving Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN), the Umhlosinga Development Agency (UMDA), and the Eswatini Investment Promotion Authority (EIPA), was announced at the OSS Summit held at Mkhuze Airport. The initiative aims to leverage the district’s location and streamlined investor services to unlock new trade and investment opportunities.

TIKZN CEO Sihle Ngcamu emphasised the district’s strategic importance. “uMkhanyakude is uniquely positioned, bordering both Eswatini and Mozambique. Investors here can take full advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area to expand their markets,” he said.

EIPA CEO Sibani Mngomezulu highlighted the untapped potential. “Businesses in uMkhanyakude can benefit from sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and agro-processing, while accessing export markets. The potential for cross-border collaboration is extensive,” he noted.

TIKZN’s export support programmes continue to play a key role in preparing local businesses for global markets. “From market readiness training to trade missions, we are equipping SMMEs to compete internationally,” said Matome Kgomommu.

At a local level, the OSS is already delivering tangible benefits. “We no longer need to travel to Richards Bay or Durban to access essential services,” said entrepreneur Scelo Mngomezulu. “This has accelerated business growth and made it easier for investors to establish operations.”

Supported by proximity to the Port of Richards Bay and initiatives such as tourism skills development programmes led by UMDA, the district is strengthening both investment readiness and local capacity.

With integrated services ranging from business registration to access to funding and regulatory approvals, the OSS model is reducing barriers to entry while enabling inclusive economic participation.

The uMkhanyakude One Stop Shop is fast emerging as a strategic platform for unlocking cross-border trade and positioning the district as a compelling investment destination within southern Africa.
